Format & Features | Agenda | Registration Fee
Antibiotic resistance is a major public health threat, with “superbug” infections occurring in an estimated 2.8 million people in the US each year. Antibiotic misuse and overuse are the primary reasons for the development of antibiotic resistance and adverse reactions—most notably life-threatening Clostridioides difficile infection (C. Diff). The risk/benefit of prescribing antibiotics must always be considered before prescribing any antibiotic.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all outpatient healthcare providers take steps to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed. While stewardship principles are well-defined for outpatient settings, the dental setting, with the majority practicing in private practice, provides unique challenges. Barriers to implementing and evaluating successful stewardship programs come when dental teams operate individually. This Stewardship Summit will address antibiotic stewardship in the oral healthcare setting. In this program, guidelines for use of antibiotics for prophylaxis and treatment of oral infections will be reviewed, the development of antibiotic resistance, adverse reactions, and C. diff reviewed and challenges to responsible prescribing will be discussed. Participants will be provided with numerous clinical tips, tools, and resources to develop and implement antibiotic stewardship programs in their own practice.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the regulatory and national landscape for antimicrobial stewardship for dentistry
- Identify national guidelines and best practices for antimicrobial stewardship programs
- Discuss barriers, challenges, and opportunities for implementing and evaluating antimicrobial stewardship programs in the dental setting
- Identify tools and resources to support the development and implementation of a successful antimicrobial stewardship program in oral healthcare
Target Audience: Dental staff, prescribers, dental policymakers, and state organizations
